Daria-I Nor, Alpe d’Huez, France

Brand new five star hotels in the Alps don’t come along every year, and that’s why there’s been so much buzz about Daria-I Nor in the French resort of Alpe d’Huez. The sister resort to Hotel Koh-I Nor in Val Thorens and Hotel Taj-I Mah in Arc 2000, Daria-I Nor has 46 rooms and suites, including some duplexes, with warm wood walls, fuzzy throws and the kind of effortless style that only the French seem to have mastered. Located in the Eclose area of the resort, close by the Les Bergers ski lifts, it’s a ski-in/ski-out hotel. That is, if you can drag yourself out of the 8,600 square foot spa, the two pools, two saunas, a hammam, a Jacuzzi, and a solarium. The hotel features two restaurants: L’Améthyste, the gourmet restaurant with spectacular mountain views, and Table de Daria, which is a bit more laid back, with variations on traditional mountain recipes. There’s also a lounge bar area centered around a fireplace. Rooms from $415 with breakfast. Daria-I Nor

Lounge at Le Cerf Amoureux, MegèveLe Cerf Amoureux

Le Cerf Amoureux, Megève, France

The French ski town of Megève might as well have its own numeric designation as one of the arrondisements of Paris, so very Parisian are its guests, their habits and their tastes. The Rothschild family set the high-born rustic tone here several generations ago but this ski resort near Mont Blanc is transforming itself to be as cutting edge as possible for the beau monde. Witness Le Cerf Amoureux. The look of this chalet-style hotel is cool and understated, with bleached wood and neutral fabrics, rustic minimalism in which the city-chic color taupe is welcomed to the classic Alpine cottage. It’s little surprise to discover that Le Cerf Amoureux is the project of Parisian hotelier Lisa Konckier, who is responsible for the Hotel de Nell in the 9th arrondisement.

The hotel has just 12 rooms, and those rooms have details like shutters, gabled ceilings and sensual fabrics. The views of Mont Blanc are a given for residents but a luxury for everyone else. Antiques such as vintage dressers are artfully tucked into the rooms and the vintage Davos-style sleds do double duty as tables. A yoga studio, a spa and screening room aid with post-ski relaxation. Minimal chic has never seemed quite so warm and inviting. Le Cerf Amoureux Rooms from $230.
