Finance Committee to vote on amended 2019 budget Friday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI/AP) — The House Finance Committee has decided to vote Friday on an amended version of the 2019 state budget bill, according to Finance Chairman Marvin Abney.

The new version of the state budget was originally supposed to be unveiled Thursday night, with a committee vote shortly thereafter, but State House leaders delayed the meeting until Friday as negotiations continue behind the scenes.

The speaker’s office says they’re trying to end the legislative session on June 22 with the new fiscal year beginning July 1.

Gov. Gina Raimondo introduced her budget plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1 back in January. Some key issues in her $9.4 billion proposal include a framework for legalized sports betting, a $1 billion school-repair plan and an expansion of the state’s medical marijuana program.

Last year the budget wasn’t passed on time because of a disagreement between the chambers over phasing out the car tax. The stalemate caused uncertainty for local governments and school districts.
