Kemp, Chirinos ejected after home-plate scuffle

LOS ANGELES — Benches cleared during the bottom of the third inning of the Dodgers-Rangers game on Wednesday night after a home-plate collision between Matt Kemp of the Dodgers and Texas catcher Robinson Chirinos.

Kemp tried to score from second base on a two-out single to right by Enrique Hernandez. Chirinos caught right fielder Nomar Mazara‘s throw on a bounce ahead of Kemp, who bowled over Chirinos. When the pair got to their feet, they shoved each other and the benches and bullpens cleared.

After an umpire meeting, Kemp and Chirinos were ejected, presumably for fighting.

Collisions at home plate are governed by rule 7.13: (1) A runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate). If, in the judgment of the Umpire, a runner attempting to score initiates contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate) in such a manner, the Umpire shall declare the runner out (even if the player covering home plate loses possession of the ball). In such circumstances, the Umpire shall call the ball dead, and all other base runners shall return to the last base touched at the time of the collision.

It was the second ejection of the season for Kemp.
