Morocco: Terrorist attacks down in 2017

The number of terrorist attacks recorded in Morocco decreased in 2017, the head of the public prosecution revealed yesterday.

Some 161 terrorism cases were registered with the Attorney General in 2017, Mohamed Abdel-Nabawi said, down from 251 in 2016. While the number of suspects brought to trial were 358 last year compared to 410 the previous year.

In total 2,000,764 cases were registered by the courts in 2017, he added.

In recent years Morocco has not seen any terror attacks on its soil, with authorities regularly thwarting operations by raiding potential terror cells and arresting suspects. The last deadly attack in the country was in 2011 when a bomb went off in Marrakesh’s famed Jemaa El-Fnaa Square, killing 17 people.
