TripAdvisor shares results from Annual Memorial Day Summer Travel Survey


With Memorial Day serving as the unofficial start to summer, TripAdvisor announces that 29% plan to travel for Memorial Day weekend, up 5% from last year based on TripAdvisor’s Annual Memorial Day Summer Travel Survey of more than 3,300 U.S. respondents. While more people plan to fly this year (32%) up by 6% from last year, the majority (74%) plan to drive to their holiday destinations.

Busiest Travel Days
• The busiest day for departure will be Friday, May 25 (30%), followed by Thursday, May 24 (21%).
• 38% plan to return home on Memorial Day (Monday, May 28).
• Many are choosing to extend their holiday, as 47% plan to return Tuesday, May 29 or later.

With 74% driving to their destinations, 39% will take shorter trips this year traveling less than 200 miles. However, 35% will drive more than 300 miles for the holiday.

Based on the survey results, the rising fuel costs do not seem to be impacting holiday travel. 90% said the increase in gasoline prices will not affect their Memorial Day travel plans. The national average gas price has risen from $2.37 on May 8, 2017, to $2.84 on May 7, 2018.

According to the survey, the types of trips travelers plan to take for Memorial Day include:
1. Beach/Ocean trip (26%)
2. City excursion (25%)
3. Mountain getaway (12%)
4. Lake escape (11%)
5. National park trip (9%)

With city trips up by 6% this Memorial Day weekend from 19% last year, the top cities travelers plan to visit for the holiday includes:
1. New York City
2. Chicago
3. Boston
4. Atlanta
5. Orlando/Philadelphia (tie)

Based on TripAdvisor’s Annual Memorial Day Summer Travel Survey results, 87% of U.S. respondents are planning a vacation this summer, up 6% from last year.

With two-thirds (66%) of travelers planning to stay in a hotel this summer, TripAdvisor reveals that booking within a month of a trip is often the best time to find the lowest hotel rates. They can save up to 40% in top destinations such as Orlando, San Diego, Las Vegas, Miami, and New York City.

As nearly 60% of respondents are flying to their summer travel destinations this year, travelers can save up to 58% on domestic flights when booking within three to four weeks of their summer trip, based on historical airfare data on TripAdvisor Flights.
