Yoenis Cespedes out of lineup as Mets consider DL stint

Yoenis Cespedes has a mild right hip flexor strain, which is the same ailment he has been playing through recently. And while the Mets are considering placing Cespedes on the DL, he’ll be available to pinch hit on Tuesday night, GM Sandy Alderson said.

“It’s the same lingering injury,” Alderson said on Tuesday. “Over the last several days, he had reported that he had not been improving. We decided to do a precautionary MRI this morning which revealed a mild strain.”

The Mets spoke with Cespedes after the MRI, and he said things had really not improved since Sunday. At that point, Alderson said it was “in the best interest of him for the moment” to not be in the lineup.

Alderson added that the Mets will monitor things over the next couple of days and that Cespedes is “prepared to be realistic” about the potential of being placed on the DL — a possibility SNY’s Andy Martino reported earlier Tuesday

“We’re very mindful that at some point this can’t continue,” Alderson concluded.

Meanwhile, manager Mickey Callaway said the Mets will only use Cespedes as a pinch-hitter on Tuesday night unless the Mets “have an obvious chance to win the game.”

As of now, the Mets can backdate any potential Cespedes DL stint to May 14.
